Programme Objective
The objectives of this programme are to enhance the in-depth
knowledge in materials
engineering, to provide hands-on experience
with the current
technology and equipment
and to bridge the gap
between materials
engineering and challenges
from the industry.
Duration
Minimum: 12 to 18 months
Maximum: 36 months
Admission Requirement
Applicants must have a bachelor degree in Engineering from UTM or
other institutions approved by UTM’s Senate; or a degree in Applied
Science or equivalent with some
experience in related field.
Graduation Requirement
Students must obtain a minimum grade of B minus for each subject
and overall average of B to graduate. Students are required to
complete a minimum of 32 credit hours out of
which 2 credits are
university compulsory subjects, 9 credits are the core mechanical
engineering subjects, 6 credits are the thesis and the remaining
15 credits are the free electives that would make up the area of
concentration or specialization.

Course Descriptions
MMB 1703 Advanced Techniques For Materials Characterisation
To provide the students with an understanding of the principles of advanced techniques
used in characterising and determining the structure and properties of materials. These
techniques include electron microscopy and X-ray,
quantitative and qualitative techniques.
MMB 1713 Fabrication and Processing Techniques
To introduce the various manufacturing and processing techniques used to produce
engineering components from metal, ceramic and polymer and provide the students
with an understanding of the principles and operation of fabrication
processes.
MMB 1723 Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Materials
To relate materials microstructural variables to the properties of materials which
include metals, polymers, ceramics and composites. To provide an understanding
of the causes of failure in engineering components and structures, and to
introduce methods of fracture control and testing.
MMB 2703 Quality Control and Materials Testing
To introduce the students to the fundamentals of mechanical testing to determine
the properties of engineering materials.The course provides a comprehensive
coverage of the various non-destructive testing techniques used to assess the
integrity of engineering components and quality of production. The concepts and
techniques used in quality control and
quality management will be covered.
MMB 2733 Advanced Materials
To provide an understanding and exposure to the latest development in advanced
materials such as special metal alloys, advanced ceramic, composite materials,
biomaterials and electronics materials, their properties, processes and
applications.
MMB 2713 Corrosion I
To introduce the principles of electrochemical corrosion and its processes and
provide the students with an understanding of the tools to analyse corrosion
problems. The course will also introduce various methods of protection
against
corrosion.
MMB 2753 Corrosion II
To expose the students to the various techniques used in corrosion testing and
how to successfully manage corrosion in applications such as oil and gas,
petroleum and automotive industries
MMB 2723 Foundry Engineering
To provide an understanding on the principles of solidification of liquid metals and
alloys during casting. The course will also provide an understanding of the effect
of melt treatment on the structure and properties of cast products.
MMB 2743 Materials Selection
To provide the students with an understanding of the relationship between the
principles of materials science and the use of these materials in modern
engineering designs and applications
MMB 2763 Surface Engineering
To give an appreciation of the importance of materials surfaces in service and to
introduce the students to the various techniques of coating and surface modification,
the structure and properties produced and their applications. This course
will also
provide an understanding on the principles of surface modification for better use
of engineering materials.
